about

In the late summer of 2018 I headed over to Italy to make some field recordings with my dear friend Enrico Caporale in Moimacco near Trieste. We recorded live & without air conditioning in the swamp heat of a humid August.

Two days in a wooden cellar adjacent to a church whose bell chimed twice on the hour and once at half-past. Later in a fifteenth century church in the Italian mountains where I kept cool by placing my feet on freezer blocks and sang whilst being feasted on by mosquitoes.

The recordings are punctuated by Rico's excellent field recordings: the chatter of birds; rain and the buzz of mosquitoes bear witness to the relentless, shimmering heat of an Italian summer.

In October 2019, just 50 copies of a full length 10-track LP / '33rpm' was released for kickstarter backers only. It came out in special packaging, to raise the money needed to make my 8th studio album The Deafening Sound of Stars.

This limited edition 'little sister' EP gives you exactly half of the tracks on the '33'...and like its sibling proceeds will be divided between those who kindly donated their time and effort to make it.

Like its big sister, The Italian Sessions EP features the sound of chapel bells, electrical storms, mosquitoes, the cackle of birds, crickets and an ancient passenger train that rattles through the Moimacco valley in the 40 degree heat.

The stunning two-tone artwork on both CDs, produced to resemble tiny vinyl records, was designed by Jamie Wood, taking inspiration both from the colour-scheme of the Deafening Sound of Stars and the gorgeous packaging of early vinyl records of the jazz era.

A lovely stocking filler!
This is a limited edition EP: only 60 of these are available.
